Instructions to Citizen Nominators for Selecting Prospective Members of Parliament
Nominators (randomly chosen) would receive the following instructions by registered mail (complete with forms and return mail envelope):
Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in a crucial aspect of our democratic process. As one of the Citizen Nominators, your role is essential in ensuring that our government is represented by individuals who are not only capable but also embody the virtues necessary to serve the public effectively. The people of Canada now rely on you to recognize the importance of your contribution to shaping a representative and effective government.
Please follow these instructions carefully as you undertake this vital responsibility:
1. Understanding Your Role
Objective: Your task is to nominate three individuals from your community who you believe possess the qualifications and characteristics to represent your political riding at the federal level.
Criteria: Nominees should be kind, thoughtful, intelligent, diligent, and of good overall character. They should have some life experience that would be beneficial for public service. They don't need to have previous governmental experience.
Rank: Rank your nominees by indicating your first choice, second choice, and third. You must choose at least one candidate, however, it is highly recommended that you choose and rank 2, and ideally 3 candidates.
2. Identifying Potential Nominees
Research: Identify individuals in your community who are known for their integrity, decision-making skills, and community involvement.
3. Evaluation Criteria
Consider the following ideal attributes in each potential nominee:
Integrity and Ethics: Demonstrates high moral principles and professional ethics.
Understanding of Local and National Issues: Shows a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the riding as well as broader national concerns.
Problem-Solving Skills: Exhibits strong analytical abilities and a thoughtful approach to resolving issues.
Communication Skills: Communicates clearly and effectively, able to articulate ideas and listen to constituents.
Leadership and Initiative: Has a proven track record of leadership and the initiative to undertake projects that benefit the community.
4. Making Your Decision
Deliberation: Consider each candidate's qualifications and community impact thoughtfully and objectively.
Diversity and Representation: Aim to recommend individuals who collectively represent the diversity of your community, including different backgrounds, professions, and perspectives.
Conflict of Interest: Ensure that your nominations are free from personal biases, conflicts of interest, or undue influence from external parties.
5. Submission of Nominees
Documentation: Fill out the enclosed form for each nominee.
Confidentiality: Keep the nomination process and your deliberations confidential to maintain the integrity of the process.
Submission: Submit your nominations to the designated authority by the specified deadline.
